Waters surrounding Indonesia are recognized as being amongst the richest on earth in variety and number of species. The reputation of locations such as Sulawesi, West Java and Bali is already well established amongst divers. But Indonesia is still the least known of the world`s best dive locations.
Hundreds of islands and coral cays, white sandy beaches and tropical vegetation: a dream of unlimited diving, far away from the crowd and the "dive industry".

1. Day: Boarding 21:00h Serangan/Bali
After an introduction to all facilities onboard we start our overnight cruise to Tulamben/East Bali. Late night snacks will be served. Imagine sailing through the night, the stars are shining and 3 days of diving in front of you… In between the dives, you spend the rest of your time spotting dolphins and manta rays, island hopping, reading, sun bathing or just being pampered and doing nothing… |
| |
2. Day: Tulamben/Bali (4 dives)
After Breakfast we start with a dive to the wreck of the Liberty at Tulamben. Just 30 meters from the beach at Tulamben is a World War One - cargo ship, broken up but impressively large, stretching along more than 100 meters of steeply sloping sand. The top of the wreck is just 3 meters underwater, the bottom is at 29 meters. 1942 this ship was hit by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine while crossing the Lombok Strait. Small groupers, cornetfish and trumpethfish, parrotfish and a few morays inhabited patches of coral are often along our route. The black sand bottom around the wreck makes an excellent photo background.
The Tulamben coral garden starts at a depth of 2-15m and is wonderfully grown featuring stone- and soft coral alike. Besides numerous species of reef fish, the beautiful blue-yellow ribbon moray eel has found a home here.
The Tulamben Wall has a nice overhang around the 18m mark, and drops to a sand bottom at just over 60m. We explore only to the 30m mark, following the ridge to its furthest extension. The Tulamben Wall is known for rare species, including the cornet, a beautiful fish with elaborate finnage and a false eye-spot.
Shark Point is close to the wall. Commonly seen are whitetip- and blacktip reef sharks and may rest at a depth of 20 to 30m in a sandy area. Occasionally even grey reef sharks and even hammerhead sharks.
After a nice dinner on board of Moana we set sail to Lombok, crossing the Lombok street on our second overnight cruise. |
| |
3. Day: Lombok, the Gilis (3 dives)
Lombok is often described as "Bali before the tourist" – an island with unspoiled white beaches, craft villages and rice terraces carved into landscapes of stunning beauty. The Gili coral islets surrounding Lombok are an underwater paradise for snorkelers and divers.
Shark Point east of Gili Trawangan is a popular dive spot in the morning. This dive site consists of different levels (24m, 20m, 18m); it starts with a slope out of hard and soft corals, the "native country" of green and hawksbill turtles. The different levels are sandy areas with small coral blocks - the variety is very big starting with schools of trevally, napoleon fish over white tip reef sharks and rays in the sandy areas…. ending up with ribbon eels, leaf fishes and even mantas. “Volkers' Golf course” is about 500m east of Shark point and starts at a depth of about 30m. It looks green like on a golf course and is the best site, to see sharks, schools of mackerels and doctor fishes. Because of its depth and the sometimes very strong currents, it is a dive for advanced divers.
Also popular for morning dives are the two dive spots in the North of Gili Trawangan, Coral Fan Garden and Basket Coral Garden. The first few meters you have the feeling of being in an aquarium - schools of colored fairy bass lets, fusiliers, banner fishes… and deeper, around the big coral and stone blocks, groupers, batfish, trumpet fish, hiding octopus and bearded scorpion fish. Look out to the blue: sometimes eagle rays, mantas or reef sharks can be seen.
Meno Wall in the West of Gili Meno goes down to 18m. It offers a lot of small coral fish like lionfish, soldier fish, gobies, crabs and a lot of wart slugs and nudibranches coming out of hiding. It is also called “Turtle Heaven” because of the many resident hawksbill and green turtles.
In the West of Gili Air is the very beautiful Air Wall that, due to the soft coral cover, shines yellow-orange depending on the position of the sun. The highlight of this wall is a coral block at 22m in which leaf fishes (scorpion fish) found their "home", surrounded by shrimps, pipefish, white-banded cleaner shrimps and thousands of glass fishes... Look out into the deeper parts for white tip reef sharks. One of our favorite dive spot is Frog Fish Point in the East of Gili Air, famous for small things and rarities. A huge coral block from 5m - 18m welcomes you - there are a lot of sandy areas, where the garden eels let off steam and corals are overgrown with anemones and their clownfish. You can find for example ghost pipefish, frogfish and a lot of scorpion fish. Have a manicure there by one of the many cleaner shrimps.
Malang Reef: Underwater canyons create the landscape here with a plateau starting at 10m and dropping down to 40m. Here you can see “everything”. Mantas, blue spotted stingrays, scorpion fish, lionfish, and white tips have been encountered here as well as spiny lobsters.
After Dinner you can go for a walk on the main stripe of Gili Trawangan which is full of bars, restaurants, and dive shops. This Island is also known as "Party Island", where mostly young Europeans find themselves "Lost in Paradise". Overnight cruise to Nusa Penida.
|
|
4. Day: Nusa Penida – Bali (1 or 2 dives)
Early morning arrival at Nusa Penida.
The best of Nusa Penida are the large pelagics such as giant trevallys, sharks, mantas, eagle rays and turtles. But the special animal to find here is the rare giant ocean sunfish “Mola Mola”. Sunfish normally live up to 300m deep, but around Nusa Penida they come close to the surface between August and October each year. The Mola Mola come very close to the reef to certain cleaning stations. They don't get cleaned by the usual cleaner wrasses or cleaner shrimps, but by schooling bannerfishes.
The best time to dive is during slack tide (= when there is little water movement) just before, during and after high tide, when for a short time the currents are not so strong. Arriving at Nusa Penida our dive instructor will choose the dive spot due to sea and weather conditions.
For drift dives very popular is for example Ped on Penida’s north coast. Healthy low lying hard coral reef banks slope gently to 20m, then down to 40m. Occasional manta rays and schools of chevron barracuda add to the rich variety of smaller fish which seem to prefer the calmer waters of Ped. Wonderful barrel sponges and gorgonians can be seen in the deeper waters, and sea snakes can be seen on almost every dive. With the reef extending up to within five meters of the surface your safety stop will allow time to spot moray eels, titan triggerfish and the brilliantly coloured emporer angelfish. Be careful not to touch the reef as the local scorpionfish are notoriously difficult to spot.
Following the dive you are invited to join a guided village tour. A fresh Coconut will be served on the beach before lunch.
After lunch on board of Moana we set sails for our cruise back with direction to Bali. Enjoy Moana’s Sundeck. Sailing in the region of Lombok Street there is a good chance if seeing pods of Dolphins.
At sunset time we enter the harbour of Bali |
